The existence of abandoned mine workings is a significant consideration in relation to planning and environmental protection. Abandoned mines, comprising trial pits, shafts, adits, and underground workings, occur across Northern Ireland. The responsibility for these Abandoned Mines rests with the Department for the Economy (DfE). The Geological Survey of Northern Ireland monitor these workings for the DfE. The Abandoned Mines Database contains over 2000 trial pits, shafts, adits, and collapses. These, along with mine plans showing the extent of the underground workings, have been used to create this layer that identifies areas where the GSNI and DfE should be consulted for Planning Applications. This layer is made available to the Northern Ireland Planning Portals, local councils and developers to assist in the identification of developments and planning applications in areas in close proximity to recorded historical mine workings. This layer is accompanied by guidance on development in areas of abandoned mines (https://www2.bgs.ac.uk/gsni/AbandonedMinesGuidance.pdf). This document also contains guidance on the production of a Mine Risk Assessment report and exemptions where a Mine Risk Assessment is not required e.g. minor works to an existing dwelling. The input features have been buffered: 100m for point locations; 20m for digitized polygons e.g. underground workings. These features are then dissolved to create a single polygon that will identify whether the GSNI should be consulted in regard to planning and development. The attribute table contains: - the dataset version, - the date of release, - the reason consultation is required - a link to the Abandoned Mine Guidance Document, - a link to the Consulting GSNI Guidance Document, and - a link to the metadata in the GSNI Data Portal
