Quaise's mission is to bring this inexhaustible, renewable, clean energy source to future generations. The company plans to vaporise enough rock using cutting edge millimetre wave drilling technology, to create the world's deepest holes and harvest geothermal energy at a scale that could satisfy human energy consumption for millions of years. Quaise's founders have set an ambitious timeline to begin harvesting energy from a pilot well by 2026. Quaise's drilling systems centre around a microwave-emitting device called a gyrotron, that has been used in research and manufacturing for decades. Tests on the 100-to-1 hole are expected to be completed sometime next year. Quaise is also hoping to begin vaporizing rock in field tests late next year. J?ackson Marshall Grimes of Project InnerSpace will discuss his research that investigates social acceptance and understanding of geothermal energy amongst the people of Varvarco, a small, remote, marginalised village in the Argentinean Andes. Many countries are broadening their energy matrix and exploring opportunities to develop geothermal power projects often in regions where industrialization has not occurred. As the number of these projects in the pre-feasibility stage grows, it is imperative that the development of these projects is done in a socially just and equitable manner. Historically the large-scale development of geothermal resources has been driven by the need to meet national electricity demands. However, as technologies and our understanding of geothermal has improved, new practical applications have emerged. Geothermal heat can serve to employ and empower communities while simultaneously building resilience to the threats of climate change. Jackson will explain his research in Varvarco; the closest settlement to Argentina's highest potential geothermal project, Domuyo. The current design of this pre-feasibility GPPP contains no plans for utilizing direct heat. Through a series of one-on-one interviews and internet surveys a mix of qualitative and quantitative questions were asked to the inhabitants of Varvarco. Data was gathered on the general knowledge of geothermal energy and opinion of its development, socio-demographics, and living conditions within the community. Based on the information gathered within this study, a variety of demonstration and profitability initiatives are suggested which may be best suited to local conditions and may continue to enhance public perception of geothermal energy. Gravity measurements on the Earth's surface have a long history for providing information about the underlying geology. Rock formations with different densities give changes in the gravitational pull and a gravity map can therefore help in many geothermal exploration programs. In the last 30 years, gravity gradiometry has became an important exploration tool as it provides the means to produce high resolution gravity maps from an airborne survey. This has been a game changer as much larger areas can be surveyed more quickly and cost effectively, whilst delivering an unprecedented level of geological detail. Gravity gradiometry survey is proving itself a useful technique for geothermal exploration, where the data can be used to locate prospective areas or to map geological structures to better understand geothermal systems and their distribution. Webinar 2: Integrating Northern Ireland's and Kensa's Visions for Geothermal Heating Integrating Northern Ireland's and Kensa's Visions for Geothermal Heating Kensa recently presented a vision for a Green and Great Britain at the House of Commons in London. The centrepiece to this vision is networked heat pumps - individual heat pumps connected to ambient temperature district heating and ground source boreholes. Kensa's approach brings together geology, communities, customers, technology and investment and therefore links incredibly well with the vision for Geothermal Energy for Northern Ireland that was launched in June 2022 as part of #NIGeothermalWeek. This webinar will describe Kensa's current progress towards networked heat pumps, illustrated by some large scale case studies in social housing and new builds. They will then describe a practical, place-based approach to heat decarbonisation for different areas across Northern Ireland. Areas are categorised by their heat density to choose between three main geothermal/ground source techniques - central plant district heating, networked heat pumps and individual heat pumps.
