High levels of engagement with the public, industry and policy makers have raised awareness of this technology and are now starting to bear fruit, with many new projects being announced globally, including two government lead demonstrators in Northern Ireland. We have also observed a range of geothermal start up companies emerging across the globe with a mission of delivering the new projects and building the industry. This geothermal phenomenon has been termed the #geothermaldecade by the European Geothermal Energy Council (EGEC). EGEC state that the last 6 years have shown extraordinary growth and they anticipate that the geothermal sector will be 13 times bigger by 2030! The untapped potential of geothermal energy across the United Kingdom represents a vast opportunity in terms of our energy transition and climate commitments, but how do we reach that potential? We need a geothermal sector vision and development roadmap to help get us there.
