<gco:CharacterString>Geothermal Atlas: Discover the Potential for Shallow Geothermal Systems in Vienna, Austria

This is the first webinar in our 2025 Geothermal Webinar Series.

This webinar will introduce the new interactive Geothermal Atlas for Vienna, Austria. This tool showcases the potential for shallow geothermal systems, by illustrating resources and possible limitations for the use of groundwater heat pumps and borehole heat exchangers. The webinar will cover the process involved in developing the Geothermal Atlas including data generation, resource estimation based on a harmonised methodology and both the presentation and the functionalities of the tool.

The Geothermal Atlas intends to give an initial overview of resources and possible limitations which can facilitate the planning process. It enhances the visibility of shallow geothermal energy and therefore can accelerate the decarbonisation of heating and cooling in Austria.

<gco:CharacterString>Evaluating The Geothermal Potential of Hot Sedimentary Aquifers Using a Hybrid Approach

This is the third webinar in our 2025 Geothermal Webinar Series.

This presentation introduces work undertaken in the Denver Basin, Colorado by WSP, in which a Hot Sedimentary Aquifer (HSA) in a former oil and gas field is being investigated for redevelopment as a geothermal reservoir.

The presentation describes how WSP have utilised standard geological, geomechanical and geophysical data to develop a robust geothermal reservoir model in which various well configurations, and hence thermal production profiles are simulated.

The work importantly also evaluates the Harvested Rock Volume for describing how the well-reservoir contact volume evolves with time. All these topics permit the rational evaluation and development of the geothermal potential in HSA geologies. The role of less hot, but more permeable, geothermal resources in HSA’s is relevant to many geologies around the globe, including those across the UK & Ireland, and wider Europe.

<gco:CharacterString>Mapping Minewater and Heat: A Spatial Analysis of the Co-Location of Minewater Thermal Resources with Future Heat Demand in Scotland

This is the fourth webinar in our 2025 Geothermal Webinar Series.

This presentation introduces work undertaken in Scotland where abandoned flooded mine workings have potential to act as thermal storage for district heating networks or as a low-carbon heating solution for buildings.

However, as with other low-carbon heat sources, heat demand needs to be in close proximity to the minewater resource, as heat cannot be transported far due to heat losses. The Central Belt of Scotland has an abundance of abandoned coal mines, and these could prove to be an important heat resource if properly utilised.

This presentation will give an overview of minewater thermal resources and will examine their co-location with heat demand in Scotland. Stakeholder interviews have informed a mixed methods approach which combines spatial-temporal mapping of future heating demand with mapping of minewater thermal resources, to establish whether they can satisfy some of the predicted future demand.

<gco:CharacterString>Making Geothermal More Visible in Great Britain

This is the fifth webinar in our 2025 Geothermal Webinar Series.

One of the challenges for wider uptake of geothermal energy is making data and information available and accessible. The webinar will start with an overview of trends in geothermal projects in Great Britain, including growing numbers of larger scale ground source heat pump projects. From 2023-2025, the British Geological Survey has had a focus on making legacy geothermal data digitally available, as well as collaborative work to make geothermal information more accessible to a range of users.

Examples will be given of work on the UK Geothermal Platform (due to be released summer 2025) and a GSHP screening tool for NHS England. Taken together, these initiatives aim to help make geothermal energy options more visible for GB and to support a more widespread deployment.

<gco:CharacterString>Geothermal Heat Pumps – How Much Can We Multiply the Temperature Down There?

This is the sixth webinar in our 2025 Geothermal Webinar Series.

Ireland has a wonderfully abundant geothermal heat resource. However, it may not be at the temperatures required for space and process heating. In this webinar, we will explore the types of heat pump that when using zero carbon, renewable electricity, could upgrade this heat where appropriate to the desired temperatures, and, using heat networks, transport this heat to the appropriate locations. Using case studies and other approaches , we will explore how we can utilise the “heat beneath our feet”.

<gco:CharacterString>Standards at the Crossroads: Heat Networks Across the UK and the Island of Ireland

This is the seventh webinar in our 2025 Geothermal Webinar Series.

The UK’s forthcoming Heat Networks legislation, underpinned by the Heat Network Technical Assurance Scheme (HNTAS), will take effect in January 2026 and establish consistent standards for licensing, service delivery, pricing, consumer protection, and compliance. While initial focus has been on conventional centralised networks, the framework is now being extended to cover Shared Ground Loops (SGLs), ambient loops (ALs), and cooling networks—technologies vital for scaling heat pumps, supporting the grid, tackling fuel poverty, and cutting carbon emissions.

In Northern Ireland, the Department for the Economy is advancing a Heat Networks Market Framework that positions NIAUR as regulator, mirroring Ofgem’s role in Great Britain. In the Republic of Ireland, the government has introduced the Heat (Networks and Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2024, creating a Heat Network Authority, enabling state ownership, and introducing consumer protections alongside ambitious district heating targets.

This webinar will explore these developments and their implications across the UK and the island of Ireland.

<gco:CharacterString>The GEMINI Geothermal Energy Project – Demonstration to Transformation on the Island of Ireland

This is the tenth and final webinar in our 2025 Geothermal Webinar Series.

Geothermal energy will be a cornerstone to achieving Ireland and Northern Ireland’s decarbonisation targets. Approximately 30% of energy consumed on the island is for heating and cooling, largely supplied through the combustion of imported fossil fuels.

We will introduce the GEMINI project which is demonstrating that geothermal energy is suited to both urban and rural areas, individual users and networks with larger heat demands. The geothermal technologies deployed in this project will help to provide new heating and cooling options in public sector buildings such as swimming pools, utilities offices and a university campus. It will also support the development of a bespoke training facility for residential scale installations. This webinar will outline the toolkits, materials, data products and information GEMINI will produce for a range of stakeholders across the island.

<gco:CharacterString>Geothermal providing Geosolutions for the University of Leeds campus, the wider Leeds urban environment and across the wider UK

This is the second webinar in our 2025 Geothermal Webinar Series.

Geosolutions Leeds brings together the combined expertise of geoscientists, social scientists and engineers from across the Faculties of Environment, Engineering and Physical Sciences, to deliver a multi-disciplinary approach to the energy transition across a range of environments including geothermal energy for heat, cooling and storage.

They’re focused on research that enables and helps support the de-risking of geothermal in the UK with the aim to encourage the increased uptake of geothermal energy. A route to de-risking geothermal energy across the UK will be through a growing number of projects allowing research and collaborations across a range of geothermal scenarios. The University’s Geothermal Campus project is one of their current initiatives through which they have developed a geothermal living lab for research and teaching on campus to provide an environment to explore how aquifers can be harnessed for heating, cooling and energy storage not only beneath the Leeds campus but also across Leeds, Yorkshire and the wider UK.

As one of the cities involved in the UK Government’s heat network zoning pilot, Leeds has been selected as one of six cities to move forward to develop the first heat network zones. This presents the opportunity to develop geothermal as a sustainable, place-based energy provision alongside a wider heat network agenda. Alongside the Geothermal Campus work, they have been working on a range of projects that bring together interdisciplinary expertise across geoscience, engineering and social sciences. These include an OfGEM Strategic Innovation Fund project to explore the potential for urban geothermal to offset the need for increasing electrification and provide opportunities for long-duration energy storage, and two research England social policy projects to focus on developing policy frameworks for geothermal uptake in the urban environment.

This presentation will bring together they're work across all these projects to discuss how their outcomes will work collectively to help bring forward the agenda for geothermal in both Leeds and the wider UK.
