Index to Abandoned Mines in Northern Ireland
Abandoned mines, comprising trial pits, shafts, adits, and underground workings, occur across Northern Ireland. The responsibility for these Abandoned Mines rests with the Department for the Economy (DfE). The Geological Survey of Northern Ireland monitor these workings for the DfE.
The Abandoned Mines Database contains over 2000 trial pits, shafts, adits, and collapses; This dataset / service provides and index to these workings and is available to view on the GSNI GeoIndex, Spatial NI and for download in a number of GIS formats.
Mine plans that are held by the GSNI/DfE showing the extent of workings can be viewed in the Registered Collection of Mine Plans ( https://gsni-data.bgs.ac.uk/geonetwork/srv/eng/catalog.search#/metadata/baae8ba1-2d73-4dff-90fc-f52d426d1701) and many are available to view online using the links provided.
